“Look,” Ronnie said, “I told you this was gonna be fun. Give it a chance, will ya!”
“I’m lonely,” Frank said. “Fuck’m I supposed to do?”
“Careerwise, or tonight?” Ronnie asked, and wagged her head. “I know how you feel, Frank. I understand. But, sweet thing, I can fix it. If there’s anything I can cure, it’s loneliness,” she said while opening her bag, taking out her keys, and giving him her professional look.
They walked into the apartment silently.
Ronnie flicked a switch, and two small lamps on either side of a sofa lit, giving the room a warm glow.
Frank looked around. It was nothing like he’d expected. When he turned toward Ronnie, she was close enough to touch.
“Did you think I’d live in a hole or something?” she asked. “This is my home. No one comes here ’less I want ’em to. Clean, ain’t it?”
Frank followed her like a sleepwalker, his eyes barely in focus. “Yes,” he said with a smile.
He felt her hand between his legs, and he felt her squeeze him, her head shaking, her eyes closed.
“Hmm,” she said. “I’ve been looking at this a long time.”
She undid his fly, and her hand went inside his trousers.
“You like this?” she said. “I do.”
“It’s been a while,” said Frank, closing his eyes.
When he opened them a moment later, she was wearing a wide grin, and those big blue eyes were bright with pride.
She took hold of his hand, then looked at her watch. “C’mon,” she said. “I want you in my bed.”
Marjorie took a bottle of brandy down from the kitchen cabinet, poured a hefty shot into her tea, and stared at the phone. Her instinct was to leave it to the luck of the draw. Carow or Charlie or Emi would call. She thought she’d read for a while. Follow Mailer around Provincetown a bit, drink some tea, and try to relax.
Her mood was good, the exercise had helped, and in her mail she found theater tickets she had ordered for a new musical. Charlie liked musicals; he loved the theater.
She sat at the kitchen table, drank a full half of her drink, thought about Charlie, thought a little about Jeff. Decided that Jeff was something she’d better stop thinking about.
She missed Charlie, wouldn’t mind seeing him. Maybe he’d call, ask to come by. She smiled. Maybe he’d get lucky.
Carow had phoned earlier and left a message. He sounded blitzed. In his day the man had been quite a cop, an inspiration. During the time when everyone’s hand was out, Carow had stood practically alone, clean, apart from all that. Now guys that couldn’t carry his stick in the old days made dirty jokes about him. Carow had lost it, lost the edge, and when you lost that spark, people could tell.
Police life had always been a rush for Marjorie. Nineteen years and never bored. No small thing in a life—amazing, really. To her the Department was real, a living thing. Something fine, separate, and apart from those sleezy Headquarters characters.
